These are standard for both the brushless and the brush type.  There are two in each generator unit.  We recommend purchasing and changing both, although only one may be bad.  Also, if you have the unit down doing routine service, you may want to replace the bearings and keep the old set for an emergency back up.

There were two types of brush generators.  One with a 21 segment  armature and a 41 segment armature.  If you take the old brushes out and shine a flashlight into the brush holder you can see the segments.  If they are narrow, about an eighth of an inch, that is 41 segment armature.  If they look to be about a ¼ inch wide then you have a 21 segment armature.  Four brushes are required.

Sorry 21 segment armatures are not available at this time. Contact us and we may be able to convert your unit.  If you’re not sure which one you have see the description under brushes.

If you talk with us and it is going to cost too much to repair your unit you can keep all your present mounting hardware and blades and purchase just the generator itself.  It is a direct bolt in replacement.

Instructions for a Brushless Generator Upgrade

These mylar seals are used to cover the brush caps and bolts holes and the ends of the generator.  The set includes 3 larger circles, one with out a hole for the rear and two with holes for the front of the generator and the generator mount.  We recommend putting silicone grease around the shaft before placing the mylar seals around the shaft.  Be sure to remove excess grease or the seal will not stick.

This is provided with double sided tape to adhere it to the rear of the generator under the back cover.  We also add a small dab of JB Weld on each end to help secure it.  These pieces do include surge protection as well.

here are a few types of blades out there.  If you are replacing just one please take it somewhere to get a good weight in grams.  We will try to match your blade weight to make it easier for you to balance your blades.  We highly recommend you send your blades into us to have them dynamically balanced.

If your hub is worn or damaged you can replace it.

On some older units the hub get worn and allows vibration.  What has happen is where the hub goes on to the generator shaft it has become distorted.  We have a kit that you drill and install two ¼” set screws to secure the hub firmly to the shaft.  It does require you to have a ¼”-28 tap and drill.

This is the piece that is on top of the pole and comes standard with a 12 inch long 12 gauge wire.

As you work on your generator and on your boat you notice that where aluminum and steel meet there is a problem.  From several recommendations from cruisers we now use Tef-Gel on all our SS bolts that meet aluminum.  The cruisers had such high praises for it we decided to try it.  I wish I would have had it in the Navy, I spent a lot of time fighting this type of corrosion on my missile launcher.  It is a 1.5 ounce tube, but it goes a long way.
